Another painting well underway

I think I've been bitten by the painting bug.

After I finished up the Pike Place Market blueprint, I started right away on this one:

The original

I'm still not done with it after 2 solid days of work. After I finish my first cup of coffee, I start working and don't stop until 6:00 when the bf gets home from work.

I've never been so sore in my entire life. And I sailed competitively in college, so I know a thing or two about being sore from head to toe.

But it's been entirely worth it.

Here's what I've done so far:

I started by painting the canvas the "Basil Green" color I though matched the original best. After a lot of math, I figured out the largest the map could be and created a grid. Because this one is so much more detailed than the blueprint, I did it in quadrants instead of the entire image:

Bottom right quadrant

I couldn't figure out a way to do this easily. I'll just say it involved excel, more math, screenshots and paint and if any one wants more details, they can ask.

I was then able to outline the off-white area with pencil and fill it in. And that took 3-4 coats of off-white paint.

Then the tedious job of outlining the off-white areas with a slightly off-black paint [with a brush that was a little too large for the job, to be honest].

I'm finally working on the interior lines/words etc.

And here's what I have right now:

It's going to be at least a few more days before this one is finished.

And I still haven't figured out how I'm going to do the very small text... Super small paintbrush, superfine sharpie or leave it off?

AND, I've already come up with another project for myself: refinishing an old(er) coffee table. It's almost mission in style, but has a birch finish. I'd take a picture, but frankly, it's covered in junk.

Gotta get back to painting :)

  1. Oh my have been very busy! How remarkable!

  2. LOVE it!! It's turning out fantastic... Can't wait to see what you do with the coffee table.

PS I'd try the extra fine sharpie, over a painted surface it shouldn't bleed and is very controllable.

  3. That looks like some big time, hard work.. wow. I don't know if i would have the patience to do that.

    Are you an art student?

  4. That is amazing! You are very talented! ♥

  5. Wow. Nice. There are just so so many projects I'd like to do - like this one. i think I would do a local park, too. It's a nature conservancy type area with a river running through it, a meadow, etc. Yea, that would be nice. Would be beautiful if it comes out like yours. Thanks so much, Linda

  6. Okay, I am thoroughly impressed but when did the two worlds of painting and math collide???
